In our section ‘DON’T SLEEP ON‘ we like to delve into artists that might not yet be a worldwide popular topic, but actually really should be. New gods on the come up, young talent with potential or underrated established forces!?
They’re all fair game..
How we got to work with Bastiaan Woudt
For this article we delved into an artist that one of us had the honour of working with. The artist we speak about, put out a facebook post a while ago asking for people/models that might want to be part of a portrait series he was working on. We’ve been follwing Bastiaan for some time at this point. We saw this as a win-win-win opportunity, so one of us reached out right away and got to making some pictures..
Who is Bastiaan Woudt?
Bastiaan Woudt(1987) has seen a meteoric rises within the world of contemporary photography. After starting his own photography practice from scratch a mere five years ago, with no experience or formal training. He has developed into a photographer with his own distinct signature style – abstract yet sharp, with a strong focus on detail. As a student of the history of photography through devouring photobooks and visiting museums and fairs, Woudt has a strong preference for classic subjects, such as portraits and nudes, and we see references to illustrious periods from photography throughout his work, such as Surrealism and the documentary photography of the 1960s and 70s. But through a sophisticated use of both camera and post-production techniques, which he has taught himself by heavily experimenting with both, he gives his own graphic and wholly contemporary twist to the classical.
While working with Bastiaan we saw a lot of his work throughout his amazing studio. We got to talk about how he got to doing what he does and what he was was working on. One project that really grasped our attention, was a project called ‘AMBO‘. An elegant while still raw Parisian dancer with a story, that the camera also really seems to love. Apart from photography Bastiaan Woudt stated that he has also been delving into the art of film.

Bastiaan Woudt is really on the move with documentaries out and multiple showings at various galleries. The most recent one(8th of July) will be at the Kahmann Gallery in Amsterdam. We are expecting some straight heat from this AMBO project though!
