JORJA SMITH

Not knowing who she was at first one of her songs came up and caught our ear right away on a podcast that played her track ‘teenage fantasy’ as a sleeper. Wanting to do research on her straight away, we found out it was Jorja Smith and we already knew and heard her on Drake’s ‘More Life’.

Drake has been vocal in his support of the star, bringing her out as his opening act on the Birmingham leg of his tour, as well as giving her hometown a shout-out.

The drop-dead-gorgeous and talented Jorja Smith is well known for her vocals on  ‘Get It Together’ and the ‘Jorja interlude’ on Drake’s More Life Album. There was even a rumor going around about the two dating(dailymail), but knowing how these stories often get made up we won’t delve to deep into it ourselves.

Who is Jorja Smith?

Jorja Smith is a 20 year old British singer from Walsall in the West Midlands. According to wikipedia Jorja’s influences range from Mos Def to Lauryn Hill to The Streets and her music should combine storytelling and commentary on social and personal issues.

Jorja was brought up on a blend of Trojan Records boxsets, Curtis Mayfield and Damien Marley and was classically trained as a vocalist during secondary school. Jorja was part of a music collective, OGHORSE, and began releasing music online.

Her soulful and jazzy vocal style has been compared to Amy Winehouse, Rihanna, Lauryn Hill and FKA Twigs. Jorja’s first release, Blue Lights, was uploaded to Soundcloud in January 2016 when she was just 18 years old . Jorja followed this up with her track “A Prince” featuring Maverick Sabre and then “Where Did I Go?”, which Drake chose as his favorite track of the moment in an article which featured in Entertainment Weekly. To close out 2016, Jorja released her first body of work – “Project 11” – a 4 track EP covering a variety of matters and musical styles.

Her style, voice, musicality and instrumental/project choices are unique, but do remind us of those previous precious talents that we’ve adored and’ve been blessed with in the past.  We believe Jorja Smith will be named among the likes of Aaliyah, Amy Winehouse, Lauryn Hill, India Irie, Monica, Floetry, etc. in the foreseeable future!

Bless your ears and experience the vibes..

Listen to ‘Beautiful Little Fools’ – http://listen.platoon.ai/beautiful-little-fools Jorja was inspired to write “Beautiful Little Fools” (at the age of 16) after reading “The Great Gatsby” and, in particular, a passage from the book in which Daisy expresses her hopes that her infant daughter would “be a fool – that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool”.
